Volunteer Opportunities

Support worker helping a parent of someone affected by Cystic Fibrosis to complete a form.

Our Support Workers provide support in their local community for people affected by Cystic Fibrosis. They provide a listening ear, help with official forms and support at meetings in relation to housing, benefits and independent living.

The role is very rewarding as you will carry out tasks that make a real difference to the quality of daily life for the young people we support. Support Workers are our first point of contact with clients, responding to requests that include help to acquire home improvements, disability related benefits or just someone to talk to. Support Workers can also be trained to provide advocacy if they wish to be more challenged, learn new skills or perhaps make good use of those they already have.

Befriending volunteer with child client and their pet rabbit.

Our Befrienders offer support to a young person living with Cystic Fibrosis. Befrienders share social activities and support to explore concerns so the person can grow self-confidence and develop life skills.

Young people living with this progressive and debilitating condition can face a variety of challenges that disadvantage them socially, financially and in the workplace. Their restrictions on their lifestyle can leave them isolated and sometimes struggling to cope. A Befriender will meet with a young person regularly to build a trusting one to one relationship. This will allow the young person space and a suitable environment to explore their feelings, discuss their fears and grow their self-esteem. In some cases the client will be increasing their confidence and coping skills for independent living.

Befrienders need to have a full driving licence of at least 2 years and have the use of a smoke free car. Find out more.

Our Drivers provide transport for people affected by Cystic Fibrosis to hospital appointments once every 3 months or less frequently on a rota. Our clients are not disabled and do not need any physical help.

Children and young people with Cystic Fibrosis have to attend clinic appointments in hospitals to have their health monitored, usually every three months. Traveling in public transport poses risks of infection and waiting for transport in our typical inclement weather is undesirable because of their chronic lung condition. Our Drivers provide transport from home ensuring a safe and comfortable journey. This service makes a real difference by reducing some of the pressure on families at this time.

Massage therapist performing a head massage for a client.

Our Massage Therapists provide massage in hospital for young people with Cystic Fibrosis. This role offers an opportunity for working in a hospital environment for someone with a professional qualification in Swedish Massage therapy or similar.

The Massage Therapy service is offered for young adults (16+) during hospital admissions. This service is highly regarded by both clients and the medical professionals who care for them. The benefits of physical and mental relaxation when someone is ill, stressed and in physical discomfort is invaluable and would not usually be available to people restricted by poor health and limited financial status. Many of these young people are far from home too in these centres and the therapist provides much appreciated social contact in additional to the benefits of the massage.

Massage therapists need to have a Diploma in Swedish Massage. Find out more.

Volunteers provide support to our Fundraising/Promotional department in various ways depending on what type of events and campaigns we have going on at that particular time. These can vary by what time and commitment they are able to give and what type of fundraising/promotion they are interested in.

Recently we have engaged volunteers in helping at events such our karting for Cystic Fibrosis nights, distribution of awareness posters and leaflets, collections & bag packs at supermarkets, shopping centres and sports stadiums, helping with social media and as part of regional promotional/fundraising groups.

There is no minimum or maximum commitment for this role. Find out more.
